As a senior scientist/engineer you will develop your own technical projects as well as collaborate with others to both optimize and improve our existing material sets performance and cost and to create entirely new composite material sets that work with our printing process. High composite part performance requires the joint optimization of both our printing process and materials so you will also work on improving and refining our printing process. This position requires a high degree of creativity and self-initiative to develop both new technologies/products and work plans. Our work is both internally funded as well as funded through external research contracts so you will have the opportunity to propose new projects and submit external funding proposals as well as internally funded projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the processing of polymers/polymer composites and the mechanics of composite materials and demonstrated experience both determining and executing research/development directions on funded research projects in either academic or industrial environments. The candidate is likely to have a Masters or Doctoral degree or equivalent experience.
- Carry out research tasks on Impossible Objects’ existing Composite Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) equipment
- Design and execute experiments as part of ongoing research projects
- Develop ideas for, and assist in writing new research proposals
- Present results to internal and external research customers, in written and oral reports
- Advise on improvements and modification of CBAM equipment and process
- Identify new potential new materials for the CBAM process
- Manage the introduction of new materials in the CBAM process
- Provide technical advice to IO application engineers to meet customer requirements
- Work with IO team members to troubleshoot process and materials issues
- Co-ordinate with external consultants and affiliates
Master’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering or a related field with focus on polymer composites or a closely related discipline. Experience in one or more of the following fields:
- microscopy (optical and SEM)
- mechanical testing (application of ASTM and other standards, and development of test methods)
- thermal and thermomechanical methods associated with polymers and composites (DSC, DMTA, Rheometry etc)
- finite element analysis (including laminates)
- qualification of composite materials
The candidate should also have strong communications skills.
